Today, the Museums of Massa Marittima represent not only an instance of the conservation and safeguarding of the extraordinary historical/artistic and archaeological patrimony that the city has inherited from its past, which abounds in history, but also an important instrument for exploitation and promotion, in accordance with the most recent indications of the new Code for the Cultural Heritage.
Originating from the Civic Museum, which was founded in 1867 as a didactic instrument connected with the Library, all the Museums of Massa Marittima have evolved and been enlarged over time. Today, they cover a complete panorama of the history of the city and its territory: from prehistoric and Etruscan archaeology to medieval art and history, to contemporary art up to the demographic/anthropological aspects of the mining culture that has characterised the Colline Metallifere ever since very remote times.
